All clients of CBG Benefits may visit the CBGconnect portal to download our detailed State Compliance overview regarding Massachusetts new rule for employers to provide Paid Leave for Veterans on Veterans Day.Effective as of July 14, 2016, a new law in Massachusetts requires private employers with 50 or more employees to provide paid leave to any veteran desiring to participate in a Veterans Day exercise, parade, or service in his or her community of residence.

Employers must allow these employees enough time to participate in these types of events in the community where the employee resides.

Employers with fewer than 50 employees may provide leave paid or unpaid, at the employer’s discretion.

The law does allow for a few exceptions. Primarily, employers are not required to provide veteran’s leave to employees whose services are:

  • Essential to the public health or safety; and
  • Determined to be essential to the safety and security of the employer or employer’s property.
